What is Ryukyu Bingata?
Okinawan Bingata refers to a unique traditional dyeing technique that originated in Okinawa during the 14th and 15th centuries. Once used for the clothing of royalty and samurai, it is characterized by its vibrant colors ("bin" = color) and unique patterns ("kata" = pattern). It is a stencil dyeing technique using paper stencils, with colors applied by brush, and features bright colors such as red and yellow, as well as motifs of nature and auspicious symbols. Having weathered the storms of 600 years of history, it continues to be passed down as a craft that symbolizes Okinawan culture.

[Chinen Bingata Research Institute: Ryukyu Bingata Workshop Tour - Limited to one group per day]
This special tour, limited to one group each in the morning and afternoon, offers a unique opportunity to experience the charm of traditional Okinawan dyeing, while observing the artisans' "color creation" and "color application" processes, which have been passed down since the Ryukyu Kingdom era. You will get a glimpse into the history and specialized tools, and hear about the thoughts behind the works and the stories passed down through the Chinen family—a profound cultural experience that can only be had here. The Ryukyu Bingata workshop we will guide you to is the Chinen family, one of the three leading Bingata families that have continued since the Ryukyu Kingdom era. As a family of dyers who served the royal court, they have woven a history of several hundred years, passing down designs that embody Okinawa's rich nature and royal culture to this day. Currently, the tenth generation, Toma Chinen, is carrying on the techniques and spirit of his predecessors, preserving and transmitting the tradition of Ryukyu Bingata to the modern age. You will witness the skill embodied in each piece, as he handles every step from the design conception to the dyeing process. As a bonus, participants in this program will receive one Ryukyu Bingata dyed art panel, hand-dyed by Toma Chinen, to take home with them.
